Project Summary

This project will use predictive analytics to identify leading indicators of financial stress that can help target households at risk of severe housing affordability stress, rental and mortgage arrears, and ultimately default or eviction.

We will apply dynamic econometric modelling methods to identify the main predictors of housing stress for different demographic groups or socio-economic situations and explore the temporal progression between life or crisis events, other transient events – for example loss of a job, or a change in housing market conditions – and the subsequent descent into housing stress, defaults, evictions or forced moves to more affordable properties.

The findings from this project will significantly improve the capacities of service providers, lending institutions and community agencies to anticipate and mitigate the vulnerabilities of families to housing stress, and by doing so, increase the security of housing tenure for at-risk families.
