The Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre (BCEC) is launching a new program of research and analysis that seeks to better understand the issues of poverty and disadvantage in Australia, and to consider strategies to alleviate the most severe financial hardships and deprivations faced in our society.

To launch the series, a new BCEC research report will examine the prevalence, depth and impacts of poverty across different sections of our society, combining national analysis and state-by-state comparisons with an exploration of the dynamics of poverty in Australia over time.

Our research will track people’s journeys into poverty, and identify factors and policies that can support their exit from financial hardship. We will also examine the issue of the working poor in Australia, and the link between insecure work and poverty.

With the release of the report coinciding with International Women’s Day, we will focus on the financial hardships and pressures among single parents and women in older age and examine how adverse life events effect women’s economic security.

The report will put forward recommendations to alleviate disadvantage and make Australia financially fairer for all.
