Australian Journal of Labour Economics Volume 27 Number 2 is out now
Welcome to the last issue of the Australian Journal of Labour Economics (AJLE) for 2024, Volume 27 No 2.
As usual, it contains a range of papers that will interest anyone involved in labour economics and labour market issues.
This issue of the journal includes a paper in our irregular series of articles by experts in the field, and is by Jeff Borland of Melbourne University. It is based on his invited address to the recent 34th Australian Labour Market Research Workshop.
Readers will find this paper thought-provoking as it adds to the understanding of how to examine labour market issues for researchers and policy practitioners. Students will find the paper particularly instructive.
The paper by Stephen Robson and Jeffrey Looi of the Australian National University, and Martin Hensher of the University of Tasmania, examines the question of the extent to which artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual care (VC) can emulate the abilities of humans in delivering human-centred healthcare.
And finally, Robert Dixon, of the University of Melbourne, looks at a commonly quoted “rule” in economics, namely, Okun’s law. This, broadly, maintains that there is an inverse relationship between output growth and unemployment. Robert’s paper sets out a new approach to understanding Okun’s law and the evolution of the unemployment rate in Australia.
